NHS GMTS Online Assessment: What to Expect

The online stages, stage by stage.

    Last updated

    Short answer

GMTS is not a Sova assessment. NHS England's assessment partner is Amberjack. Stage 1 is the approximately 45-minute, not-time-limited Future Potential Assessment; Stage 2 is the roughly 60-minute Alignment Assessment; Stage 3 is a virtual assessment centre.

    The stages

For 2027 entry, the scheme publishes these stages:

    • Stage 1 — Future Potential Assessment, approximately 45 minutes and not time limited, with practice for each question type and a feedback report on completion.
    • Stage 2 — NHS GMTS Alignment Assessment, about 60 minutes; only video questions are timed, responses are reviewed manually rather than by AI, and candidates receive feedback.
    • Stage 3 — virtual assessment centre, January–February 2027.

How we help — and where we do not

Our optional scenario-judgement practice is framed around the NHS Constitution values using our own keying. GMTS does not publish this as an assessment stage or marking scheme.

It is not a reproduction of an Amberjack or GMTS assessment. The reasoning modules are general practice, not GMTS stages.

    Preparation order

Read the official descriptions of Stage 1 and Stage 2, use each practice question type the scheme provides, and prepare examples for the later virtual assessment centre.

    Put it into practice

The fastest way to internalise the format is practice in the same question formats.
